Yandex: The Ivan Drago of Search?

A story in SearchEngineLand by Andy Atkins-Kruger this morning profiled the “Comeback Kid” of Russian search, Yandex.  Apparently, the search engine spent 2010 taking the Russian search market away from Google, while racking up a tidy sum of revenue.

So we took a quick look at some of our network’s data, which is mostly English language, to see how Yandex stacks up.  Here’s a chart of the countries most dominated by Yandex across the Chitika network:

Keep in mind, this is primarily English-language traffic coming from each country.  Yandex’s share of Russian-language traffic is likely much higher.

Oh, and as for the United States, Yandex sends a whopping 0.002% of the search traffic we see.

  1. My own very limited overview of traffic to my own sites shows Yandex very close to traffic to Baidu in terms of traffic. They are both miles behind AOL, Ask, Bing, Yahoo and Google though.

    1. Yeah, Baidu tends to have the same traffic share characteristics as Yandex. Both are sending .002% of US traffic, but Baidu only goes over one percent (within our network) on traffic from China – about 13%.
