Abstract
There’s been a lot of interesting developments going on this October in the OS industry. In the month where they lost Steve Jobs, Apple launched iOS 5 and announced the iPhone 4S. In our last OS market share installment, Insights predicted that the iPhone 4S (what we thought would be the iPhone5) introduction would boost the iOS share, which we found to be true in October. Insights also predicted that Windows, who released the developer build for Windows 8 last month, would continue to lose ground in our data set, which also came to fruition. Android is releasing five new smartphones on AT&T, which should boost their market share.
Graphs
This graph shows the current operating system distribution, and the changes in market share from September to October.
Highlights
- Though Windows still owns 77% of the market, they continue to slide this quarter, losing about 2% total
- Mac, who claimed over 10% of the market according to our last report, fell slightly in October, dropping .6%
- Linux made a surprising gain in October following the release of Ubuntu 11.10
Predictions
- Android is launching a dozen new smartphones, five of which will be on AT&T. This move should boost Android’s share over the next month
- As more people are updating to iOS 5, look for the iOS share to increase
- Windows has been gradually losing share for the past three months. Insights believes this decline will continue, despite the release of Windows 8.
