Abstract
Chitika Insights’ newest report looks at the mobile carrier market by web use. There have been some interesting developments in the carrier market recently. The introduction of the iPhone 4S is this month’s hot topic, and Sprint just announced that they were jumping on the Apple bandwagon. The iPhone is the top phone by web use, and clearly influences the market a great deal. AT&T has the predominant share of the iPhone market (though Verizon is gaining ground) which helps secure them as the leading carrier in internet use.
Graphs
Highlights
- AT&T’s share of traffic dropped 1% this month, but still remain the leading carrier in mobile web use
- Sprint and T-Mobile, who have been at odds over the potential AT&T/T-Mobile merger, both made gains of over 1% to begin this quarter.
- Verizon, AT&T’s main competitor, also saw a 1% drop in mobile surfing
Predictions
- With the introduction of the iPhone 4S, look for AT&T (who use technology that handles traffic from the iPhone 4S with twice the speed that Verizon and Sprint provide) share to grow significantly.
- Sprint is offering unlimited data plans for the iPhone 4S, and a cheaper price ($99.99) for the iPhone 4. While this move seems risky, we believe this will prove benefitial to Sprint’s market share as a whole, and sequentially their overall web use.
- AT&T announced that they are introducing five new Android Smartphones to there 2011 lineup. This should also influence AT&T’s growth in the upcoming quarter.
