Android Market Share Grows in June – iPhone 4 Launch Has Little Effect
During the month of June, a few important things happened in the mobile market: the HTC Evo 4G launched on Sprint, Apple’s yearly iPhone redesign came out on AT&T, and according to online ad network Chitika, the Android operating system snatched about two percent of the mobile market away from the iPhone.
Chitika looked at a sample of mobile traffic coming through their network during the month to determine the changes, which come as somewhat of a surprise, given the level of hype surrounding any new iPhone launch. While the Evo’s launch seemed to pull just over a percent of the mobile market into the Android camp, the iPhone 4’s launch had no discernable impact, suggesting that the vast majority of people who bought Apple’s newest device at launch were already iPhone users upgrading to the newest model.
Looking at four sample three-day averages over the month, the effects of the launches can be seen fairly well. Between the 1st-3rd of June and 8th-10th, Android jumped from 16.68% of the market to 17.81% – a shift that can likely be attributed to the Evo. Between the 21st-23rd and 27th-29th, surrounding the launch of the iPhone 4, Apple’s market share actually declined, from 55.70% to 55.49%.
This data throws into question Apple’s tactics of launching one extremely-hyped device per year, tied to a single carrier (AT&T). It appears that Google’s tactic of allowing third-party phone manufacturers to launch multiple devices over all major carriers is a major driver of Android’s growth. The tactical differences mirror those of Apple’s mainstream operating system, OSX, when compared with Microsoft’s Windows – despite its reputation as a superior operating system, OSX has failed for years to get much above 10% of the operating system market, perhaps because no third-party computer manufacturers are able to build machines that run it.
