A Window Into Mozilla’s New Release Process

Recently, Mozilla has shifted its release strategy to mimic that of Google Chrome, in the sense that they have reduced the amount of time between updates. Just three months following the release of Firefox 4, Mozilla came out with Firefox 5. Our Insights team was curious to see how this new strategy influenced how quickly users switch over to the most recent implementation.

Chitika Inc. analyzed a week of traffic and determined that over 53% of Firefox users have updated to the latest version. Initially, we were surprised by this alarmingly high adoption rate, since Firefox 5 has only been out for a month. We were also intrigued by the fact that more people are browsing the internet using Firefox 3 than Firefox 4. After some deliberation, we realized that was because Mozilla implemented the auto update function on Firefox 4, while those who used earlier versions of Firefox had to update manually. Perhaps, this accounts for the uneven distribution between browser versions.

The automatic update feature allows for a very quick, simple transition to Firefox 5. Clearly, Mozilla is focused on keeping their customers up to date on the newest browsers. As a Firefox user, I appreciate the fact that they’re constantly innovating their browser’s stability while making it easier to use and modify. Since Firefox 5 makes up over 53% of Mozilla traffic since its inception, it’s safe to say that their customers are loyal, and eager to stay on top of their latest browsers. Stay tuned to Chitika Insights for future browser breakdowns and market updates.
