Browser and OS Markets Disected

Over the past week, the analysts at Chitika Insights decided to take a look at what operating systems and browsers responsible for the majority of the traffic on the internet. So, for the first time, we are pleased to present you with this week’s OS /Browser Breakdown.

Leading the “OS Pack” Windows remains king with 79% of the market. The closest follower is the Mac-OS with 18% of the market. The remainder is fragmented amongst a variety of open source and mobile devices, such as Linux, the iPhone, and Android. With such an established market in businesses and across America, it is unlikely that Windows will yield its lead any time soon. But, as the variety of devices and systems available to consumers increases, we expect its lead to decline over time.

The browser market is much more fragmented, but, Microsoft is still in the dominant position with Internet Explorer, which takes up 52% of the market. Firefox, Chrome, and Safari are the next closest competitors with a 20%, 14%, and 13.6% market share, respectively. It is interesting to note that the increased competition and frequency of version updates in the browser market has made it more difficult for Microsoft to maintain a dominant market share. As Firefox, Chrome, and Safari continue to develop and release versions which surpass Internet Explorer in terms of functionality and aesthetic appeal, we also expect Microsoft’s browser market share to decline significantly.
