To see what percentage of mobile devices within the Chitika network are running either Android, iOS, or another mobile operating system, Chitika Insights performed an analysis of the unique impressions seen originating from mobile devices within the Chitika Ad network and determined the share of these impressions represented by each respective operating system by analyzing the user agent of each device. The following paragraphs detail the methodology behind the Mobile Dominance Tracker coming out of Chitika Insights.
Impressions
Determination: The operating system of an impression can be determined through analysis of the user agent. All user agents of mobile devices pass a string similar to this (in this case, we are using an Android impression):
Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.2.1; en_gb) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Ninesky-android-mobile/2.2.0 Safari/533.1
Reporting
Pie Chart: The percentage reported in the pie chart represents a rolling twenty-four hour average of mobile traffic, with a six hour delay to ensure maximum continuity within the data. These percentages are simply the count of each particular group (iOS, Android, and Other) divided by a total count of all mobile traffic observed.
Line Chart: The line chart highlights the use of each operating system on an hourly basis. For each hour, the methodology is the same as in the pie chart, except shown using a time series. For example, if Android impressions made up 15% of all mobile impressions on April 19th at midnight, and 16% at April 20th at midnight, the chart would highlight this growth (and show all of the hours in between).
Why is this a surprise? There are mostly Windows PC’s in the world right? While I prefer my Mac which I can put WIndows on also, I’ll stick with Win 7, I don’t know what my husband or the others int he house will choose. it would be funnier to see Mountain Lion outpaced Windows 8 bye any percent! LOL
