The world’s second largest phone manufacturer Samsung made record sales with more than 300 million phones sold in 2011. Bloomberg reports that the Korean manufacturer’s net income increased by 17% in the fourth quarter of 2011. While Samsung’s record sales continue bringing new innovations to market, Chitika Insights wanted to take a closer look at the manufacturer’s phone profile.
To quantify this study, we broke down Samsung’s current offering of mobile devices and analyzed their presence on the Chitika Ad network to determine which of them is seeing the highest level of traffic. The research sample covered hundreds of millions of impressions as seen on our ad network, all from the US, between January 20th and January 26th, 2012.
As reported in Chitika Insights Mobile Manufacturer Market Share report on February 1st, Samsung generated a 12.66% share of internet activity in January 2012. We looked at the 12.66% figure and broke it down to see which specific mobile devices were fueling the traffic.
Samsung’s award winning phone, the Galaxy S covers 39% of Samsung’s traffic share. The US variants of the Galaxy S were released between June and September 2010. Upon release, the Galaxy S was the thinnest smartphone available. Galaxy S II which was released in May 2011 follows its predecessor with covering 12% of internet activity. Finally Galaxy Nexus covers 2% of the traffic. Galaxy Nexus was launched on December 15, 2011 in the US and since then has started to gain a portion of the market share.
In addition to breaking down Samsung’s mobile device distribution, Chitika Insights also analyzed the mobile carrier distribution for Samsung phones. As you can see from the graph below, Sprint is the leading carrier service for Samsung with 30% of the internet activity share. While T-Mobile follows Sprint closely with 27%, Verizon and AT&T fall behind with 16% and 11% respectively:
As sales of smart phones surge and Samsung continues to launch new products, we may see the current figures change. We are just a few days away from the launch day of the Samsung Galaxy Note, set to be released on February 19th. The 5.3-inch tablet phone’s official AT&T version was recently introduced in a buzz worthy Super Bowl ad and excitement surrounding the release has been building. Also, the Galaxy Nexus and Ace might be game changers during the course of the year. Chitika Insights will keep an eye on the developing market.
