As the number of the browsers available to consumers continues to grow, its necessary for search engine marketers to be aware of the browser distribution of their sites traffic. Chitika Insights’ newest study breaks down CTR by browser version. Knowing what browsers return the highest CTR is useful information for online advertisers looking to optimize their ad monetization.
Mobile browsers led the pack; Safari and Chrome mobile are neck and neck as the two most valuable browsers with CTRs of 1.22% and 1.18% respectively. Browsers on mobile platforms generally garner higher CTR numbers for a couple reasons. There are many reasons why mobile users click on ads more frequently when surfing the web.Mobile users are more likely to search local, therby more likely to click ads representing a nearby business. Another possible reason for this high CTR could be because the smaller screen on mobile devices cause more accidental clicks.
Opera, the main browser for Linux users, is most valuable among desktop browsers. This is surprising because, typically, Linux users are thought to be some of the most technologically profficient users, and subsequently the least suceptible to online ads.
Microsoft Internet Explorer users apparently click a lot of ads. MSIE finds itself on the higher end of the CTR spectrum. MSIE versions 6, 8, and 9 are all in the top 5 highest CTR among desktop browsers. The fact that it’s the most popular browser and has a high CTR makes it an ideal target for advertisers.
On the other end, both Firefox and Safari are less valuable, maintaining a strong presence in the lower end of the CTR spectrum.
We found it interesting that CTR for MSIE is so high, while Safari, Firefox, and Chrome’s desktop browsers are all much lower. What do our readers think make these statistics so different. Do you think this is due to the nature of the web browser infastructure, or perhaps characteristic of the users?
