iPhone Carrier Wars: Verizon Coming in Hot

In the iPhone market tug-of-war between AT&T and Verizon, it appears that Verizon is gaining ground. It wasn’t long ago when Verizon users could only admire the iPhone from the sidelines while AT&T controlled the market. Despite the iPhone’s attractiveness, most Verizon users held tough, unwilling to switch providers just for one device. Additionally, Verizon’s reputation for great coverage made it that much harder for users to switch.

Since our last “iPhone War” study, Verizon now owns 23.9% of the iPhone share. Verizon iPhone adoption has risen consistently since its February release. Given it keeps up with this rate of growth, Verizon could equalize the iPhone market by the end of this year.

There are many possible reasons for this rise. For one, an influx of Verizon users could be purchasing the device in response to the surplus of users who have been holding out for an upgrade. Another possible reason could be that users who are currently subscribed with other mobile carriers have incentive to switch to Verizon because of the availability of the iPhone. Perhaps these are both contributing factors.

As always, we’ll keep you posted on the latest updates in mobile ads and iPhone market share data.
