Search Engines: Market Share Breakdown

Over the past year, a few new search engines have ramped up their efforts to challenge Google’s stranglehold on the search engine market. Bing and Yahoo merged to create a competing force which has been increasingly successful at capturing market share, crossing over 30% of all searches according to a recent ComScore report. Chitika, the online advertising network which services millions of impressions each day, conducted a research study looking into the dominance of different search engines across their network and how it compares.

Google still controls a dominant portion of the market, at 77.2% of total share. Interestingly, Chitika’s data indicates that Bing and Yahoo fall significantly behind, contrary to a report by Comscore, with shares of 9.9% and 11% respectively. Finally, both AOL and Ask (which are powered by Google), came in last with shares of only 1%. Although there are a variety of other search engines available, they make up less than 1% of the market, which goes to show how stiff the competition is in this industry.

No matter how stiff the competition is at the moment, it is clear that there is going to be a long and drawn out war in the search engine market, which will likely end pyrrhic victory. Keep checking in with Chitika Insights to stay in touch with the latest news and trends both on and offline.
