Remember when Facebook was the “up and coming” company in the tech world? Also remember when Myspace was the company poised to dominate the social media world? Seems like quite the distant memory.
Fast forwarding back to 2011, Facebook now ranks as the second most visited site according to alexa.com. While Myspace’s #62 seems respectable, it is a far cry from what the social network giant used to be.
Jay Yarow and Kamelia Angelova over at Business Insider did well to highlight the collapse of Myspace, highlighting the massive drop in users over the course of the last year. 2011, of course, has already been a rough year for Myspace, highlighted by its January layoff-fest.
Interested, Chitika Insights took a look at referrals from Myspace and Facebook, to compare the former rivals and their 2011 performance. Unsurprisingly, Facebook has had an over 27 to 1 advantage over the dying Myspace.
This data coincides with Alexa rankings, which shows a 40.29% 1 month reach for Facebook, as opposed to a 1.40% for Myspace. While the value of social network traffic to a site is questionable to advertisers, the difference is still very noteworthy.
One takeaway from these two is for sure: the jack of all trades lost to the master of one.
would the last MySpace employee pls turn out the lights as you leave the building?
