As indicated earlier today on mashable, SF Gate, VentureBeat and pretty much everywhere else, Reddit has seen enough recent traffic growth to hire more staff. The goal, apparently, is to counter the site’s tendency to go down regularly. From a third party perspective, this seems like another win for Reddit in the battle between Digg and Reddit, given the layoffs Digg had to suffer through three and a half months ago.
Chitika Insights has been very proactive in viewing the growth of Reddit, so this announcement comes as little surprise.
It is worth noting how Reddit and Digg are performing in relation to each other to fairly evaluate Reddit’s performance, so we took a lot at the last few weeks of data for both social news sites, on a day to day basis, and a 7-day rolling average.
Daily:
7-day average:
While both seemed to have a dip as a share of our network in recent days, this is likely more attributed to random fluctuation over anything else. The more important detail is that while Digg has jumped in front of Reddit on some single days, the seven day trend has seen Reddit ahead of Digg within our network throughout 2011. Knowing that even post-layoffs, Digg currently has three times the staff of Reddit, one has to assume Reddit will continue to have the traffic share to accommodate the growth in personnel.
