Windows Phone 7 Outnumbered by… Windows 98?

Windows Phone 7, acclaimed by critics as an excellent mobile operating system and the beneficiary of Microsoft’s advertising dollars, continues to struggle to catch on.  One odd observation, based on traffic coming through the Chitika advertising network, is that it’s currently outnumbered by Windows 98.

Win-98-vs-Win-Phone-7

We at Chitika Research monitor traffic shares of various operating systems coming through our network.  As of the beginning of January, Windows Phone 7 was sending about half as much web traffic as Windows 98 to our network of over 100,000 publishers.

For a reference on Windows Phone 7’s growth over the past month, in our December post we found that WP7 was sending about 0.4% as much traffic as iPhone and Android (combined).  At present, that number has risen slightly – to an average of 0.44%.  Growth is happening, but not very quickly.

The good news for Microsoft, though, is that Windows Phone 7 is already halfway to the market share that all other mobile Windows builds own.  It’s still got a long way to go, and it’s nowhere near a threat to Android and iPhone yet, but it is growing.

  1. I have a few relatively small websites and Google Analytics has shown the same thing for me with more people having Windows 98 than Windows Phone 7.

Going off topic majorly – I have also noticed that Google TV is starting to show up in my operating systems, but no sign of Apple TV. Is this something Chitika have experienced?

  2. Pan Glozz – your research is faulty. There is no auto launching facebook app on WP7. A user must manually start up the app, so your numbers are not legit in any way. Nice try though. Stick with Chitika’s numbers.
