Search Market Share – Microhoo Making Headway

Yahoo! is seeing a resurgence in search market share, along with Microsoft’s Bing, and it’s not artificially inflated by new product designs.

Here at Chitika, we’ve got the unique position of being able to see a large portion of the Internet as it comes through our network.
So when controversy arises about search engine market share, as it did today with Yahoo! and their adding searches to the Yahoo News slideshow, we can take a look at our own numbers and see what the deal is.  Since our numbers are straightforward traffic, rather than searches executed, we can see the growth of search engines in a different light.

Yahoo! did indeed see growth in its market share between March and April – their share of search traffic to the Chitika network grew from 5.75% to 6.14%.  What’s more, that trend seems to be holding – through the first week of May, Yahoo! has sent 6.15% of all search traffic to us.

Microsoft, Yahoo!’s recently added partner in search, is seeing similar growth.  march to April saw Bing’s search share rise from 4.02% to 4.73%.  May looks like it will be another month of growth for Redmond’s finest, with Bing already sending 4.95% of the Chitika network’s search traffic.

This growth in traffic share is coming at the expense of Google, the only major search engine that has seen a decline in its traffic sent in 2010.  For the year, Google is down 1.46%, although it should be noted that it’s still sending nearly 87% of all search traffic.
